Sultan Massage — Our Signature Ritual
The Sultan massage is our own ritual, built from the hammam culture of this region rather than imported from a spa manual. Sixty minutes, warmed oil, a steady unhurried rhythm, and hot towel compresses that open the session, appear again in the middle of it and close it.
It is the session we recommend most often to visitors who ask for something specifically Turkish, and the one our regular guests book when they want an experience rather than a repair. If deep tissue is a job of work, this is an hour of being looked after.
The ritual, step by step
It opens with a hot towel across the back — not a symbolic gesture but a genuine compress, held long enough for the heat to reach the muscle. That does two things: it softens the tissue before any pressure is applied, and it tells the nervous system that this hour is different from the rest of the day.
Then the oil, warmed rather than room temperature, and long unbroken strokes across the back, shoulders and lower back. The pressure sits in the gentle-to-moderate band throughout — this is not a session that hunts knots. Halfway through, a second compress across the shoulders. You turn over for the arms, legs and the front of the shoulders, and the ritual closes with a hot towel across the face and neck. That last compress is the moment most guests describe afterwards.
Why the hot towel matters
There is a practical reason and a cultural one. Practically, moist heat penetrates faster and more evenly than dry heat, which is why a towel does in three minutes what a hand takes fifteen to achieve. The muscle underneath is measurably more receptive by the time the therapist starts.
Culturally, the compress is the thread that runs from the hammam tradition into modern practice. Anyone who has spent an afternoon in a Turkish bath knows the sequence — heat, then work, then heat again — and this session compresses that arc into an hour on a table. It is the reason we did not simply call it a relaxation massage.
Who it suits
Visitors to Istanbul who want one session that is characteristic of the place rather than the same treatment available in any city. Guests who find firm pressure unpleasant and want an hour that is entirely comfortable. People booking a gift, because it is very hard to dislike. And anyone marking something — a birthday, an anniversary, the end of a difficult month.
It is not the session for a specific injury or a stubborn mechanical knot; for those, see deep tissue or targeted therapeutic massage. And if you want to build a full afternoon rather than an hour, the combination we recommend above all others is the traditional hammam followed by this session — heat, scrub and foam first, then the ritual. About two and a half hours, and the closest thing to the complete tradition you can have in one visit.
Price and booking
The Sultan massage is ₺2,500 for sixty minutes — less than aromatherapy or hot stone, which surprises people given that it is our signature. The reason is simple: it uses no specialist consumables, only towels, warm oil and time. Between 10:00 and 13:00 sessions start from ₺1,200. The full list is here, and nothing is added at the exit.
Book a day ahead where you can; the compresses need preparation and we would rather have them ready than keep you waiting. If you are combining it with the hammam, book several days ahead — that block occupies a room for two to three hours and fills first at weekends.
Practical notes
Tell us if you have sensitive skin or any circulatory condition, since the session involves sustained heat. It is not suitable during pregnancy in its standard form, though we can adapt it — ask and we will explain what changes.
The oil stays on the skin afterwards and continues working; a shower is available if you would rather not carry it. Take the tea afterwards and give yourself ten minutes. This is a session designed to leave you slower than you arrived, and rushing out of the door removes most of that.
Frequently asked questions
What makes it different from a classic massage? The hot towel compresses, the warmed oil and the pace. It is a ritual rather than a routine, and the pressure stays comfortable throughout.
Is it a real Turkish tradition? It draws on the hammam sequence of this region — heat, work, heat again — compressed into an hour on a table. It is our own ritual built on that arc.
Why is it cheaper than aromatherapy? It uses no specialist consumables — only towels, warm oil and time.
Will it help my bad shoulder? Not primarily. For a specific knot, book deep tissue or targeted therapeutic massage instead.
Can I combine it with the hammam? Yes, and it is the combination we recommend most: about two and a half hours in total. Book several days ahead.
Is it suitable during pregnancy? Not in its standard form because of the sustained heat, but we can adapt it. Ask and we will explain what changes.
